Missouri unemployment worsens, but slows - Washington Business Journal:

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 9 percenfin May, up from 8.1 percent in the department reported Monday. April’s 0.6-poingt decrease in unemployment now appears with the May increase part of an upward trenr datingto mid-2008, state officials Approximately 272,000 Missourians were estimated to have been joblessa during the month of May. Nonfarm payroll employmeng decreasedby 3,700 jobs in May, marking the smallesrt monthly decrease since employment began to drop sharpl in November.
Job losses were concentrated inmanufacturinh (3,700) and construction (1,600), which were partly offset by gains in health care and social assistance and local government (900). Durinf the past year, employmenyt dropped by 74,300 jobs, or 2.7 percent. The main exceptions to the downward trend in the past year have been private educationaoservices (2,500), health care and social assistancd (6,000), federal government (2,700) and locapl government (3,300).
