The facility will house 114 Metro but if the land isfully developed, up to 250 busese will be able to live there. The new bus expected to be ready as early as 2012, will be built at a site knownh as D.C. Village. Metrok wants the facility to meet environmental standards that wouldf enable it to receive a Silver ratiny underthe U.S. Green Building Council’s program for Leadership in Energyt andEnvironmental Design. The new facility will replace the Southeasterhbus garage, which was sold for $69.25 millioh and vacated last year becauses of its closeness to Nationals Park. The land at D.C. situated at Shepherd Parkway and BluePlainse Drive, was appraised at $8.0t5 million.
The sale's $6.45 million price tag represents the appraisal value minus the additiona l operating costsof $1.6 milliomn incurred by Metro for moving the Buses that had been running out of the Southeasterh bus garage have been dispersed to other garagews in the region at an additional operatintg cost. Until the new facilithy is completed, the additional operating costs for the busex will be fundedfrom Metro’s operating reserve account, which was created from the proceeds of the Southeastermn bus garage sale. The final sale of propertt must first be approved bythe D.C. which will consider it at a June2 meeting.
